Anna Grífols: “Try everything and see what works for you”

REAL STORIES

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a dolphin trainer. I also went through a phase of dreaming about being a hairdresser. A doctor. A magician. A pirate. A trapeze artist. Even a phone salesperson. But a vet? I never felt the calling.

Of course, this article isn’t about me.

Anna Grífols knew exactly what she wanted. From a very young age, she decided she wanted to take care of animals - and she nearly did so professionally. But shortly before applying to veterinary school, she read that the first year involved dissections, and that forced her to rethink her life plan.

For different reasons, she ended up studying Human Nutrition and Dietetics at university. Her comment I like most is this: “to understand myself better, too.” If only we always moved through life with that intention… Anna is now a sports dietitian-nutritionist.

Pau and Anna, co-founders of Salssa.

She is also a single mother, a defining part of her story, and one that led her to become deeply committed to sport and to making it her profession. Raising a child without support or a fixed schedule led to the creation of Nutriexper, the first company specialising in sports nutrition that also allowed her to develop a new life alongside her professional one. And in the midst of that whirlwind, one thought remained steady, guiding all her effort: “I want to be really good at something.”

Anna has always enjoyed cooking with whatever foods she has within reach. But what does that have to do with sport? Why is good nutrition so important for athletes? “First and foremost, because it’s about good health,” she tells me. Nutrition, hydration, rest and training are our four fundamental pillars of physical health — but until not that long ago, nutrition “was the great unknown”.

Why should athletes use Salssa?: “We don’t want people to only consume Salssa. Success lies in trying everything and seeing what works for you."

That’s where Salssa was born: from the desire to create natural pouches with a formula that would allow them to be preserved while being responsible both towards the environment and towards the most sensitive athletes’ stomachs. Partnering with Pau Rocas, a doctor in nanomedicine, allowed Anna to spend a year and a half perfecting an unprocessed food, eventually launching the 100% natural pouches you can buy today.

And why this type of packaging? These days, there are all kinds of energy bars - healthy and efficient. There are gels, too… Anna clears it up quickly: “Because of the size. Ideally, you want 25-35 grams of carbohydrates, but we wanted to do it naturally, with the fibre and natural carbohydrates that come from real food. That requires a larger format, especially since we don’t use liquid sugars.”

Mystery solved.

Anna: "Nutrition, hydration, rest and training are our four fundamental pillars of physical health."

I decide to go straight to the big question, the one every article I write should answer. Why should you consume Salssa? I’ll say this upfront: she doesn’t disappoint. “We don’t want people to consume only Salssa. Success lies in trying everything and seeing what works for you, in learning how to alternate Salssa with other brands, and in daring to try natural products.”

Anna can’t imagine her life without sport — but neither can she imagine it without taking care of herself. And taking care of yourself means looking after every aspect of your life. Including how you eat.
